Client Population

Medical conditions of the patient population that HeLP serves include asthma (13 percent), developmental delay (11.8 percent), cancer (9 percent), injuries (7.1 percent), seizure disorders (6.3 percent), lung problems (5.9 percent), ADHD (5.8 percent), and heart problems (5.6 percent) as well as autism, cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, kidney disease, sickle cell disease, and Down syndrome. 

HeLP's diverse client population includes Caucasians (31 percent), African-Americans (46 percent), and Latinos (18 percent), as well as families of Chinese, Arabic, Somalian, French, Bosnian, Native American, and Bengali descent. Approximately 13 percent of HeLP families speak Spanish only and 81 percent of HeLP’s clients are female. (Statistics estimated).

HeLP’s caseload, as of March 2009, includes 1773 cases since its inception in late 2004, with clients from 100 of Georgia’s 159 counties. The number of cases HeLP has accepted for legal representation has increased each year with the addition of new staff. In 2009, HeLP opened 476 new cases. While HeLP primarily serves low-income families from the greater metropolitan Atlanta area, a number of HeLP’s clients are from rural areas throughout Georgia with little or no access to legal assistance.
